Biography

Emily Mantone, a cellist from Mount Sinai, New York, is pursuing a postgraduate degree at Yale School of Music under the tutelage of Paul Watkins, former cellist of the esteemed Emerson String Quartet. She previously completed her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at The Juilliard School.

Emily has served as a principal cellist of both the Yale Philharmonia and The Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of such conductors as Tan Dun, Alan Gilbert, Barbara Hannigan, Peter Oundjian, David Robertson and Gerard Schwarz. She has also participated in Yale Cellos, Axiom, New Juilliard Ensemble, and Juilliard Chamberfest. She has previously served as principal cellist of the Handel Festival Orchestra, based in New York City, and was a Fellow of Apex Ensemble, based in Montclair, New Jersey, under the baton of Music Director David Chan. Emily frequently performs with Second Ending Ensemble, as well as the Parlando and Redeemer Downtown chamber orchestras, all of which are located in New York City.

Emily has spent summers as a member of the Britt Festival Orchestra in Jacksonville, Oregon, led by former music director Teddy Abrams, at the Aspen Music Festival (principal cellist, Aspen Opera Center Orchestra), National Orchestral Institute + Festival at the University of Maryland, the Boston University Tanglewood Young Artists Orchestra (principal cellist), and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival as an Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellow. She is a former principal cellist of New York Youth Symphony, and is a a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College where she was a student of Marion Feldman.

A passionate chamber musician, Emily and her collaborative partner, pianist Umi Garrett, recently released their first album, Ludwig van Beethoven: The Complete Cello Sonatas on the Navona Records label. ​​

​

A firm believer in community engagement, Emily served as a Gluck Community Service Fellow at The Juilliard School, where she performed  in many health care and assisted living facilities throughout New York City. Emily studied in the Teacher Training Program at The School for Strings in New York City, and  has taught  weekly chamber music classes and private lessons to young cellists.
